Chess 960
The game follows the usual rules of chess. Only the starting position and castling are different.
Starting position
The pieces on the first rank are placed at random: the bishops stand on squares of opposite colours, and the king stands between the rooks. Black's pieces mirror White's. Both players get the same position, and every game has a new one.
Castling
After castling the pieces end up where they do in standard chess: kingside puts the king on g and the rook on f; queenside puts the king on c and the rook on d.
You may castle if:
- neither the king nor that rook has moved;
- every square between the start and end squares of the king and the rook is empty (apart from those two pieces);
- the king is not in check, does not pass through an attacked square and does not land on one.
To castle, click your king and then your rook.
